There should make a rule against misused or just plain shitty grammar and spelling. And, if you want to have any sort of weight in a thread (e.g., not look stupid), take three extra seconds to fix your typos - if you don't know how, invest another three seconds into using a spell checker.

You know yourself that there is a line between 'accepted' and 'annoying'. For exactly the same reasons as we have slang terms in colloquial english that uses words that may not be in the official Oxford English Dictionary, we have slang terms in online typed english.

Name calling is effective in small doses, notably when the person deserves it. If someone were repeatedly or without cause calling someone else a fucktard, then yes, it'd make him look like one as well (though doesn't mean he's wrong).

Most of the above mentioned abbreviations are universally accepted and by themselves don't make a user look stupid... Owned isn't an abbreviation; it's slang, which is perfectly acceptable for internet speak, not to mention a lot of real-life usage. We're not talking about formal dissertations, just general understandable and non-stupid conversation online. [Do note, again, that you've also used some of the aforementioned "stupid" words.]

Would you consider yourself an uneducated idiot if you used the work "ok"? That came from the deliberate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okay) misspelling of "all correct" into "oll korrect", but has now become a regular staple of the English language. After a while, some technically incorrect words or phrases become "correct" or acceptable to say at any education level. Some shouldn't, though, like "real good" - :yuck:.
